47 GOVERNMENT ENTITIES, 1800+ PARTICIPANTS COMPETED IN 11 SPORTS ACROSS 3 WEEKS.
The inaugural Abu Dhabi Government Games kicked-off in style at Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub on 27 March, with 47 government agencies from the UAE capital set to take part in the event over three weeks.
An Abu Dhabi Sports Council initiative, the 2023 Abu Dhabi Government Games includes competitions with more than 1800 participants across 11 different sports for men and women: badminton, basketball, chess, cycling, fitness, football, padel, running, shooting, table tennis and volleyball.
That programme's aim is to use sport to enhance positive morale among the government's workforce, while driving professional and personal development in the work environment.
Abu Dhabi Sports Council hopes this will have an impact on both the mental and physical health of its employees, while motivating those taking part to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
His Excellency Arif Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, expressed his happiness with the success and wide participation of the first ever Abu Dhabi Government Games, stressing that this was the beginning of stronger editions in the coming years.
“The Abu Dhabi Government Games Championship is a mini-Olympics for all employees, in order to contribute to the development and change of their lifestyle and make sport a way of life for them, which is a permanent vision and mission from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council."
Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub CEO, Matt Boucher, added: "We take great pride in hosting the very first edition of the Abu Dhabi Government Games that brings together over 1800 athletes from various government entities. It's wonderful to bring so many people together during the holy month of Ramadan and promote the positive ambitions of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, such as better mental and physical health.”
Abu Dhabi Police were the winners of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Government Games, while the trophy for ‘Best Entity – Maximum participation’ went to the Abu Dhabi Statistics Center.
